Cranial Osteopathy
What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a gentle technique often used by our osteopaths. Cranial osteopaths can pinpoint health issues and correct them by feeling the small movements of the skull, and the motion of the membranes inside it.
Due to the gentleness of the technique, it is often used to treat babies and children. But all ages can benefit including the elderly and patients unsure of conventional osteopathic treatment.
What happens in a Cranial Osteopathy treatment?
In a typical cranial osteopathy session, the patient will usually lie (or sometimes sit) fully clothed on a treatment couch. The osteopath will place their hands lightly on the skull and tune into what is happening by ‘listening’ to the tissues beneath their hands. By using their knowledge of anatomy and physiology they can often detect subtleties of motion and tension that may be suitable for gentle release.
Is cranial osteopathy a type of head massage or “faith healing”?
No, because of the name, cranial osteopathy or cranio-sacral therapy, people often think that it only concerns the head and spine. Cranial osteopathy is not a form of head massage, although contact is made with the head in most treatment sessions. Because the treatment approach is very gentle it may appear to the observer that “nothing is happening”. However, most patients do report that they are aware themselves of the small movements and pressures that the hands of the osteopath may be making.
Cranial osteopathic treatment supports health in the body. |
